Tradition - The Amish and Amish Landscapes
In her newest series of paintings depicting the Amish, Julia was inspired by a Spring "Mud Sale". Held each year in the rainy Spring, the Amish auction off their produce, cattle and quilts in the muddy barns and fields near Julia's home in Lancaster County.
She has brought the essence of these simple people's lives to our eyes in a respectful way, without intruding on their private world. As an artist, what intrigued Julia were the contrasts of the drab, subdued colors against the stark, bright whites and occasional touch of vibrant red, and the repetitions as a design element. Since all the Amish men dress alike (including the boys) and their farms (all white buildings) and buggies (grey or black) have similar characteristics as well, the subject matter was very interesting. Women also dress in a simple way, with some subdued color and patterns. They provide the food at the sale, so none were visible at the auction.
