The pose of her model Heidi in this portrait is unusual, and that is what made it interesting to Julia- the shapes formed by the arms and hands, the slender, long neck and hair pulled up in a bun. She is looking away, and the eye of the viewer is taken through the painting, to her beautiful eyes, and out from her gaze.
